Michael McIvor was admitted to the Bar in 1979 and practised general law in Te Awamutu from 1980 to 2000. He was a partner initially in Edmonds Dodd in Te Awamutu before that firm merged in the late 1980s with another firm to become Edmonds Judd. He remained a partner until he retired from the partnership in 2000. He was responsible for all the Court work for that firm which included employment law, family law, criminal law and civil.
In 2000 he moved his business to Hamilton and went out as a Barrister Sole. His practice now focuses on criminal law, acting for youth in the Youth Court and acting as Lawyer for the Child in the Family Court. He has been a Lawyer for the Child since the late 1980s. He is a senior criminal lawyer able to take all range of criminal work, but now generally deals with serious crime.
He is a Past President of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Branch of the New Zealand Law Society and was the Te Awamutu Coroner for 13 years.
Outside of the law he is a 30 year member of the Te Awamutu Kiwanis Club and has been a past Governor of the New Zealand South Pacific District of Kiwanis International.
He was the Founder President of the Te Awamutu Seido Karate Club (1980) and holds a sixth degree black belt in Seido Karate.
